El Ganges brota de un manantial glaciar en lo alto del Himalaya, a dos tercios de la cima del monte Shivling, en un afloramiento helado conocido por los lugare\u00f1os como Gaumukh, o \u00abla boca de la vaca\u00bb. Hab\u00eda caminado durante varios d\u00edas para rezar en el nacimiento del R\u00edo Sagrado, cerca de donde un sabio llamado Patanjali hab\u00eda puesto en pergamino los Yoga Sutras unos 2.500 a\u00f1os antes. Mientras sub\u00eda, observaba a los <em>sadhus<\/em>, los yoguis peregrinos, sentados en estoica meditaci\u00f3n y ba\u00f1\u00e1ndose en las g\u00e9lidas aguas.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Luego, a casi 4.000 metros sobre el nivel del mar, me quit\u00e9 los zapatos y prob\u00e9 el agua con los dedos de los pies. Me concentr\u00e9 en mi respiraci\u00f3n y me sumerg\u00ed.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Inspira,<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Espira,<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Inspire<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unos instantes despu\u00e9s, me sent\u00ed flotar sobre el arroyo y observ\u00e9 mi cuerpo debajo de m\u00ed, temblando en silencio. Record\u00e9 lo que Patanjali hab\u00eda escrito acerca de que el yogui puede abandonar su cuerpo a voluntad. Me sent\u00eda libre y sin l\u00edmites, y pod\u00eda percibir las monta\u00f1as nevadas a mi alrededor, el bosque a mis pies y la vasta extensi\u00f3n de cielo azul que me envolv\u00eda y me sosten\u00eda. Lo percib\u00eda todo a la vez. La naturaleza, el r\u00edo, el cielo y yo \u00e9ramos uno.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Entonces, algo me devolvi\u00f3 la conciencia a mi cuerpo. En un instante, volv\u00ed a estar en mi propia piel y solt\u00e9 un grito que reson\u00f3 en las monta\u00f1as. Salt\u00e9 fuera del arroyo y, cuando la circulaci\u00f3n volvi\u00f3 a mis miembros, sent\u00ed como si me pincharan un mill\u00f3n de peque\u00f1os car\u00e1mbanos. Me tumb\u00e9 en una gran roca, riendo y llorando, empap\u00e1ndome de su calor. Me record\u00e9 a m\u00ed mismo que el yoga es una pr\u00e1ctica interior y que enfrentarse al hielo y al fuego est\u00e1 bien, pero las verdaderas pruebas del yogui son espirituales.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hab\u00eda venido al nacimiento del Ganges para documentarme sobre un libro. Tambi\u00e9n estaba all\u00ed para pedir la bendici\u00f3n de Devi, la Diosa Madre, para componer una versi\u00f3n de los Sutras de Patanjali que aportara la sabidur\u00eda jugosa, femenina y no dogm\u00e1tica de esta antigua tradici\u00f3n. Pas\u00e9 muchos a\u00f1os practicando yoga y estudiando con los sabios de Am\u00e9rica. En los Yoga Sutras, encontr\u00e9 muchos paralelismos con lo que hab\u00eda descubierto entre los chamanes ind\u00edgenas que hab\u00eda conocido en medio mundo.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tanto los yoguis como los chamanes buscaban dominar niveles de conciencia que les ayudaran a liberarse del sufrimiento y les llevaran a una experiencia directa e inmediata de lo Divino. Ambos buscaban la quietud y la iluminaci\u00f3n y la expresi\u00f3n de su m\u00e1ximo potencial humano. Ambos buscaban curarse a trav\u00e9s de la disciplina y la pr\u00e1ctica. Cuanto m\u00e1s aprend\u00eda sobre los antiguos yoguis que vivieron hace miles de a\u00f1os en las estribaciones del Himalaya, m\u00e1s me daba cuenta de que eran los antepasados de los chamanes del T\u00edbet y Am\u00e9rica.
