The Sacred Valley, Through the Eyes of an Artist

I’m sketching with intuitive speed using simple, bold marks, recording an inspiring high altitude landscape while looking across at Mt. Veronica to the east. From my sheltered nest on a steep slope, I feel the flutter of a breeze rising from the depths of the concentric terraces of Moray, high on a plateau in the Andes in Peru. It is time for our final ceremonial rites under the leadership of the Four Winds Society, within the famed “Sacred Valley.” I am one of many on the Via Illuminata expedition of 2012, a first-class travel and spiritual journey with the descendants of the Laika medicine people. The trip is so engaging, with historic sites and mountain vistas magically layered with profound spiritual messages from our tribal leader.  My first day at Uro Urco, Pachar, was a struggle between note taking, color theory and sketching; all while catching the sense of the Serpent Temple and learning the ways of Sachamana and the winds of the South. What a great place to engage in "the shedding of one’s stories” with the Laika medicine men and Dr. Alberto Villoldo, in person!

From here on, I did my sketches before and after our ceremonial exercises and usually late into the night. My subject matter focused on our daily travels that started by bus with the option, at a point, to either hike or ride to designated ceremonial sites that aligned with the four archetypes of Serpent, Jaguar, Royal Hummingbird, and Condor/Eagle. I discovered the mythology surrounding the sites of Machu Picchu, Ollantaytambo, and Moray beyond being unique areas of interest.

My site sketches and studio paintings offered me constant “tracking”, reliving the sites and ceremonies of the expedition.  Upon my return from Peru, I enrolled in the Medicine Wheel workshop so as to become a Mesa carrier. With a more in depth study of each direction and coinciding archetypal mythology, I found myself working a lot with my paintings during Mesa and perception exercises. This, I realized, could be a creative asset to those walking a path of such transformation. I hope the sites of Peru with their animal archetypes within the paintings will bring you joy while you track and journey as a mapmaker in your travels of “becoming.”

Return to Salkantay

I first journeyed to Peru with The Four Winds twelve years ago, and signed up for Ausangate. I had read in Alberto’s book how he kissed the bottom of a glacier at the sacred lagoon and received great gifts of power.  Immediately I knew that I had to do that as well.

Ausangate is the grandfather: the one that inspires us to look at our dreams and manifest them. Salkantay gushes a wild energy and is the untamable feminine, connecting you with your raw self and helping birth your pure potential.

There were about sixty students on this expedition, half for Ausangate, half for Salkantay. Every day we hiked to sacred sites in preparation for the holy mountain as my excitement about the possibility of becoming a heroine in Ausangate grew each moment.

The night before our departure, without explanation, Alberto said: “I want you to go to Salkantay instead of Ausangate.” I felt weak in the knees. My dream bubble had been burst and I was upset.

On the way to Salkantay the following morning I saw a lake that was completely still. The waters became a mirror and made me look beyond my anger, as I realized that I was inundated with sadness because I wanted to be close to Alberto in Ausangate. How could he send me to Salkantay instead?

We crossed the pass and arrived at the campground for our powerful evening ceremonies with the Q’ero shamans.

Later that night, I found myself on hands and knees, fingers digging into the Earth with an overwhelming sense of surrender which I had never known before. Through my tears came a prayer of gratitude to Mother Earth, for the peace and understanding I was granted. And suddenly I knew I would someday walk the mountain with Alberto, but not before I was ready.

Since then I have journeyed countless times with Alberto to Mt. Ausangate and Salkantay, and I lead our journeys there with his blessing. Yes! I did kiss the glacier at the bottom of the Jaguar Lagoon and experienced tremendous power. And yes! I did hike a moraine to take part in a ceremony at the "huaca", the belly of the mountain that very few Westerners have visited.

I did not conquer Salkantay as I had many mountains in my youth; Salkantay conquered me. Never again have I gone to climb a mountain. Pilgrimage is my only way now. Every step is a prayer as I commune with the mountain, with Earth, with Spirit.

Salkantay is wild, messy and humbling. Its name means the one that cannot be domesticated. It is raw energy, and it unleashes pure potential.

I am excited, curious, happy and open-hearted to return to Salkantay to lead a group for the Four Winds. If you feel called to explore your undomesticated wild side, join me this coming July.

Warmly,
Marcela Lobos
