The Power of Gratitude
The Earthkeepers believe we must live each day as if it were our last. Being ready to die at any instant allows us to live fully and dream courageously, but it also has the hidden gift of nurturing the seeds of gratitude within us. When we stop rushing around, keeping ourselves busy and distracted, we find that we have the time to look at the larger picture of our lives and acknowledge our blessings.

After being felled by stomach flu, for instance, we often awaken the next morning with a deep appreciation for a simple piece of toast and our ability to sit comfortably on a chair. After experiencing a brush with death or hearing about a sudden tragedy – an earthquake, a bridge collapse, a fatal car wreck – we look at our partner or children or best friends and think, “How lucky I am to have them in my life! I ought to spend more time with them and tell them how much I care about them.”

Gratitude, the feeling that we’re blessed, helps us to stop being enslaved to our to-do lists and remember why we came here: to love, to learn, to grow, to discover what we can do to participate in the unfolding work of art called creation.

Feeling deep gratefulness also reminds us of what we most value, and inspires us to stop procrastinating, awaken from the nightmare of frenetic but meaningless activity, and start truly living the way we want to live, with boldness and originality.

This Native American prayer reminds us of the fundamentals in life that deserve our gratitude:

We return thanks to our mother, the Earth,
which sustains us.
We return thanks to the rivers and streams,
which supply us with water.
We return thanks to all herbs,
which furnish medicines for the cure of our diseases.
We return thanks to the moon and stars,
which have given to us their light when the sun was gone.
We return thanks to the sun,
that has looked upon the earth with a beneficent eye.
Lastly, we return thanks to the Great Spirit,
in Whom is embodied all goodness,
and Who directs all things for the good of Her children.

My heartfelt appreciation goes out to all of you who daily continue to inspire others with the wisdom of the ancients.
