What the world needs now is love
We live in a world that is increasingly dominated by fear. Fear of terrorism, environmental disaster, nuclear warfare, cyberattack... While these fears may be unlike any before, fear is the oldest emotion known to man.

I like to think of fear as an acronym for False Evidence Appearing as Real that is, when we focus on what we dread, we give power to false evidence and make it reality. We forget that fear can’t be remedied by understanding why we’re afraid, just as hunger can’t be remedied by understanding why we feel famished. This is why most therapies that focus on helping us understand the origins of our fear are so ineffective at getting us to let go of that fear forever and heal ourselves.

During the time of the Conquest, there was a group of Laika warriors who believed that if fear lived within you, you were already as good as dead. It’s not that they didn’t experience being scared, they just weren’t moved by fear. Their love radiated so strongly that there was no place for darkness within them, nor for dwelling on what might happen. They lived free in the light of fearlessness, and because of that, they could not die.

When we become luminous warriors, we recognize that our job is to use love to vanquish its opposite  and its opposite is not hate, but fear. Fear is the absence of love in the same way that darkness is the absence of light. Fear disconnects us from Spirit, from nature, and from our own inner selves. Our challenge is to exorcise the fear and its darkness within by embracing love and its light.

We often confuse love for a warm glow we sense in our bellies, and as something we can offer and withdraw, like a cat who comes and goes at its pleasure. It’s easy for us to extend love toward those who are lovable, but loving people and situations that are not to our liking isn’t so easy.

To an Earthkeeper, love is not a feeling  nor is it something you barter with. Love is the essence of who you are, and it radiates from you as a brilliant aura: You become love, practice fearlessness, and attain enlightenment. While the light of love versus the darkness of fear may simply sound like a metaphor or the stuff of mythology, there actually is a scientific basis to this universal idea.

Scientists know that every living thing on Earth is made of light: Plants receive light from the sun and turn it into life, and animals eat green plants that feed on light. Light is the fundamental building block of life, and we are made up of light that is bound into living matter. Moreover, biologists have discovered that all living cells emit photons of light at the rate of 100 flashes per second. The source of this photon emission is DNA.

Just as the light of love is real, so is the darkness of fear that is stored in every cell of our bodies, perhaps even clouding the light of our DNA. The false evidence that we perceive as real is strong enough to obscure our every thought and affect our every interaction. It feeds upon itself and can begin to defy rationality, as we worry endlessly about what mishaps might befall us.

The challenge, then, is to shed fear and embrace love. The way to do this is to confront death at the energetic level instead of the literal one  in other words, face death as a sacred passage, not as a catastrophic event in the ER. Once you experience it and let it go, it no longer stalks you.

The Coming
A sweeping historical novel of the American West, intimately told through the life of Daytime Smoke the real-life red-haired son of William Clark and a Nez Perce woman. Capturing the trajectory experienced by so many native peoples  from friendship and cooperation to betrayal, war, and genocide  this epic novel braids historical events with the drama of one man's remarkable life. Rigorously researched and cinematically rendered, The Coming is a page-turning, heart-stopping American novel in a classic mode.
