The Return of the Magicians
I started traveling to Peru back when no one was going there because there were terrorists in the land. I was one of the few anthropologists working in the region, and I had the privilege of meeting extraordinary medicine men and women who lived at altitudes of 16,000 to 18,000 feet, in villages that had been disconnected from other Andean communities for hundreds of years in order to preserve an ancient body of wisdom and prophecy.
This knowledge germinated 50,000 years ago at the foothills of the Himalayas and was brought here by the last of the ancient wisdomkeepers. During the decades I spent studying their spiritual and cultural practices, these medicine men and women became my mentors and friends.
For many years I have passed this knowledge on to others and led expeditions to ancient ceremonial sites built in the clouds by the Inka—extraordinary architects, astronomers and mathematicians who could predict eclipses 100 years into the future. They and their culture were annihilated by the Spanish Conquistadores in the mid-16th century, except for the Laika who hid in the high Andes.
Recently my expeditions have joined the descendants of the Laika for The Return of the Magicians—an annual gathering of elder shamans who come down from the mountaintops to take the pulse of our planet and recite the Prophecy of the Time to Come. These medicine men and women have a living dialog with Mother Earth and can feel the changes that are causing upheaval in the world. We have the extraordinary privilege of working with them to secure a destiny for the Earth—and ourselves—that can help us create a sustainable future.
Today we know that in order to transform, evolve and become awakened beings, we must do that from a place of service to Mother Earth. The more we are able to be of service to the Earth, the more we can align our own intentions with the intentions of the planet, and the more successful we become in our lives. That success is measured in the shamanic context by degrees of enlightenment and illumination.
One of my mentors once said to me, “Alberto, a long time ago before we were born, we were all gathered in a great, beautiful, grassy field, and a very large archangel came and said to us, ‘You know, this is going to be a very challenging time for planet Earth. There will be epidemics, war, terrorism, famine, climate change. We need healers—who wants to come?’ And we all volunteered.”
You, me, everyone volunteered to come to Earth and be part of the solution. To dream a new world into being that has all the ingredients necessary for our children’s children to live in peace, with clean air, drinkable water, and an extraordinary future they can inherit.
And this is the work that we do in the Andes. If you’d like to learn more about my expeditions to Peru and Chile, visit The Four Winds expeditions page.
